I think starting it in the present year is good. I do think we should dump some things however, obviously, that have happened in RL. I'd like to think that 50 years of metahumans running around has changed events enough that politicians and circumstances are different, and I'm always a fan of not using RL people whenever possible in a comic setting. People can make someone who's similar to a RL person if they want to use that particular flavor of individual well enough.
